Episode summary: Sylvester Jenkins III had a pretty rough upbringing. His mother was a teen mom and became a high school dropout. She worked 12 hours a day just to make ends meet, but that left Sylvester alone. He fell into gangs and drugs, but still wanted to graduate because he didn’t want to have the same struggles his mother had. 

After school, Sylvester joined the army, got married, and had a child. While deployed, he was going through a divorce, but Sylvester bottled everything up, so he was combatting in war and was combatting his relationship. He came home to nothing; lost the house, his bank account was empty, and he had no car.

He was ready to end it all. It was his child who saved his life. He does not want his child to grow up the same way he did… without a father. So, he had to start looking inward for that interior warrior. Shifting his mindset, he now has the goal and purpose of helping others.

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i’m doing phenomenal by the way what about your self?

[Nick McGowan]: man i’m doing great now we were both kind of chuckling about some of the

[Nick McGowan]: chaos and the noise behind us

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: right

oh my god what what the hell is

[Nick McGowan]: happening in your house right now and

it’s a crazy storm that’s going on outside

i’m in florida we get these

[Nick McGowan]: crazy storms and we were just talking

about how right around four o’clock three oclock

[Nick McGowan]: at sometimes it’s like the apocalypse for

fifteen minutes so hopefully none of this stuff

craziness in the middle of the day now

about it when somebody’s bitting about something you’re

thing but i’m sure

have kids that know those sort of sound

were

some time and now you’re helping people so

the next we got to get some context

[Nick McGowan]: to that so

[Nick McGowan]: why don’t you take a little bit

of a step back and tell us about

[Nick McGowan]: how you were raised and ultimately how

you got to here you’re at now

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: absolutely so i come from

[Nick McGowan]: yah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: humble beginning man i got to be

honest with you i grew up in a

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: parent home gang a drug affect neighborhood

my mom worked to the l at at

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: bib city mill

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: which was one of the largest mills

in columbus georgia which is where i’m originally

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: from um we slept in the car

she couldn’t

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: find child care for us man so

we went through the motions this was in

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: the eighties now so hit me out

this was in the eighties before sale phones

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: before tablets before all these gadgets

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that you see out nowadays so you

can just imagine how creative we got we

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: was out there in the parking lot

awaiting for my mom to get our work

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: for those twelve hours that she worked

every ship and we’ll leave from there and

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: go to the school and everything goes

but during the time of me going to

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: school man at a younger age i

was a latch key kid i don’t know

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: if you know

[Nick McGowan]: all

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: what the

[Nick McGowan]: by

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: latch

[Nick McGowan]: themselves

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: key it is but

[Nick McGowan]: yep

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: some people might not

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: but

[Nick McGowan]: hm

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: those kids that came home unsupervised for

a period of time until all by themselves

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: and i was one of those kids

and it was easy for me to get

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: involved with games and drugs

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: and i even for a moment of

time as a teen age i was an

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: expiring drug dealer i was a game

member an occasional thief i was so um

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i think i

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: was so vulnerable when it came down

to that type of life style that it

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: became my sara get family and in

the process of living that life style i

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: felt multiple times at school i felt

the fourth grade

[Nick McGowan]: hm

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i felt the sixth grade i felt

the eighth grade i felt the tenth and

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i felt the twelfth grade i was

on the verge of being a high school

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: drop out the only thing that kept

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: me sustained when it came to school

was my mother and it was only because

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: she was a high school drop out

because she got pregnant at the age of

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: sixteen with my older brother that was

the only thing

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: and she was big on education so

i did want to let her down that

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: area because i knew the sacrifices she

made in order to get me to the

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: point that i was in one thing

that did stick out to me though was

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: my senior year and english class i

was taking test this was the final test

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: whether or not i would graduate on

time and my english teacher was calling everybody

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: out into the hallway to give them

their grade and when she called out my

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: name and me and her were standing

out there i look in her eyes she

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: looked me in my eyes and she

told me she was like vesta i hate

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: to break the bad news to you

but you failed the test i don’t think

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: you had were to take go to

college

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: and i don’t fear that your college

material so i was devastated right there because

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: now i’m feeling like i’m dumping in

a box of rocks like i’m not worthy

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: enough to go to college so you

know i always tell people your words create

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: worlds because what

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: you feel your brain just portant as

what you feed your body and when i

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: thought about that as far as what

she told me this is teacher this is

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: somebody who’s supposed to prepare me to

the next

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: level who supposed to encourage

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: me to do bette then what i

was doing and for her to say that

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: to me it just devastated it truly

broke my heart so for me thinking that

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i was too done for come i

tell us to join the military instead now

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that became a challenge for me as

well because you know you got to take

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: this uh

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: the ad bad which is the test

that you take going into any branch so

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i failed to as bad when it

came

[Nick McGowan]: dan

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: for the navy and i felt the

as again for when it came to the

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: air force the marines didn’t even give

me a shot the army that was a

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: army recruiter that said hey i can

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: get you into the army i promise

you i could

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: get you in and you know i

was like whatever i try whatever whatever it

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: tastes okay i just want to get

out of here so i went to him

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: and did the as val sure sure

that he was able to get me in

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i was like overjoyed man because i

was able to like really

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: get out of parvity i purpose and

then try to provide my mother with a

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: better way of life because she was

working for minimum wage man for twelve hours

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: every day just to provide for me

and

[Nick McGowan]: yah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: my silence man so it was kind

of like i got

[Nick McGowan]: true

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: whatever i can just

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: to be able to

[Nick McGowan]: hm

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: you know the military man like it

has good benefits but the pay it’s just

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: not all that but i was a

single man so

[Nick McGowan]: hm

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: it didn’t matter you know so i

was able to like give her money

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: and still just live off in the

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: barracks getting you know um you know

going to the defect and eat lunch and

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: all that stuff so i didn’t have

to worry about me it was more about

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: providing

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: for her and helping her i just

wanted a better life for her so during

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: the time frame of me being in

the military like i

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i was still living that lifestyle man

i never got away from

[Nick McGowan]: am

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i was stared

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: doing drugs i was still doing alcohol

i was engaged to be married at one

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: point of time and then my fiance

[Nick McGowan]: you

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: she cheated on me and got pregnant

by somebody else and

[Nick McGowan]: in

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: this was my first three years the

army all this happened to me i got

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: article fifteen like i busted down in

rank

[Nick McGowan]: hm

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i was just going through a world

wind man i just spiraled down

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: you know when you’re going through a

lot man like you got you you ever

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: heard of ever childhood experience s aces

right

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: so

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: um sis

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that’s what i was experiencing from my

childhood and you know the army tell you

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: down to build you back up but

a lot of times all they’re doing is

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: adding on extra trauma

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: or drama what you are ready have

so you had never gettin out of this

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: cycle

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that you’ve already been in so for

me

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: it was just one thing

[Nick McGowan]: man

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: got to another and i just suppressed

all my

[Nick McGowan]: yah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: emotions i never released

[Nick McGowan]: h

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: any of it so i was just

like

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: a soda soon as you shake it

up and you started to take that top

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: off it explodes and i had that

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: point what i went down that man

so

[Nick McGowan]: buck

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: after about the first eight years of

my military career i consider myself

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: to be a follower that transition into

a manager and i was it was until

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: my third deployment to reck that i

realized the obligation had been bestowed upon me

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: as a leader and as we’re getting

ready to board the plane and we get

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that last or to spend with our

families one of my soldiers introduced me to

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: his family his wife his kids mother

and his

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: father

[Nick McGowan]: ah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: and as we’re standing there talking and

[Nick McGowan]: yes

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: he’s saying all these great things about

me his mother pulls me to

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: the side she says

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: please take care of my son to

bring him back home safe now you know

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: how hard it is to provide

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that obligation

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: to someone to tell

[Nick McGowan]: a

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: them like yes i would bring your

child home we’re going to combat we’re going

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: to the war and you want me

to see him

[Nick McGowan]: hm

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: tell you like honestly that i can

provide you with this but of course i

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: wanted to give her that reassurance and

when that happened i said man this woman

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: is really giving me her child she

is giving me full responsibility of somebody that

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: she gave birth to

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: and that’s you know when somebody do

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that they’re giving full responsibility

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: somebody that they

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: raised their holding

[Nick McGowan]: here you go

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: at least years they’re like to you

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: giving you full responsibility

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i just told

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: you about my background now this one

don’t know me from a can pan but

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: she ain’t trusting me you know what

i’m saying so for

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: somebody that had that trust in me

[Nick McGowan]: great

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: yeah that confidence in me it just

little fire in me that continued to burn

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: to this day so it gave me

a sense of self worth you know a

[Nick McGowan]: ye

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: gay since a purpose so we went

down to this deployment we got to extend

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: it from twelve months to fifteen months

but during the time frame of this deployment

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: nobody knew

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that i was going

[Nick McGowan]: a

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: through acrimoniest voice nobody knew what i

was experiencing during the time family being in

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: combat and then in combat dealing with

my relationship

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: nobody knew that experience hardships i was

going through in order to wake up every

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: day and continue to face the battles

that i was dealing with not

[Nick McGowan]: h

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: only in wreck

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: dealing with my personal life as well

[Nick McGowan]: yah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: it was very challenging it was very

[Nick McGowan]: ah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: emotional i didn’t know how

[Nick McGowan]: sure

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: to handle it when i came back

home was hard to decipher between possibility and

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: probability because you never know what’s going

on you you got to think you’re in

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: combat when you’re in combat your life

is on the line twenty four seven

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: seven days a week

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: seven days a week every morning

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that you wake up you can possibly

lose your life you never know

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: the time or the day

[Nick McGowan]: a

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: guess what when you come back home

now everybody expects you

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: to just go back to the regular

person that you were you know how long

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: it takes to pick up a habit

it don’t take long at all now you

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: think you over here for a whole

year and you think it takes only roughly

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: about ninety days to pick up a

habit so you you tell me how i

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: spoiled to deciphered

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: between pow building in probability so when

it came down to just you know dealing

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: with a lot of that stuff from

my return from from combat and then just

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: going through the motions of the voice

[Nick McGowan]: work

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: because i can back home to nothing

the house was empty bank account empty car

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: going you know what saying i came

literally to nothing

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: so i waited the white flag man

i was ready to end my own life

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i was ready to call it quick

i didn’t have no more intime

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: had

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: nothing else in me i was completely

dry but the only thing that really gave

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: me a little a sense of life

it’s the fact that during the time frame

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: of that relationship

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i had a child

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: and that was you know i said

if i take my life then my child

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: would grow up the same way i

did without a fad and i was like

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: i can’t do that i got to

figure out some way i got to dig

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: deep i got to find my inner

warrior and i got to be the best

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: person i can for that individual

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: so

[Nick McGowan]: m

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that was the pivotal moment for me

that’s when everything shifted and when that happened

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: my

[Nick McGowan]: oh

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: focus totally changed i started focusing on

me until the focus was on me and

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: that’s what kind of led me into

the direction of everything that i do right

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: now to be able to

[Nick McGowan]: yeah

[Sylvester Jenkins III]: help people to uh

situation or they’re told a story
